The Best Bike Trails in Summit County: A Local’s Guide + My Sunday Ride Past Bakers Tank

Summit County is built for riders. With miles of singletrack weaving through aspen groves, high‑alpine ridges, and historic mining corridors, this is one of Colorado’s most iconic mountain biking playgrounds. Locals ride here year‑round, visitors plan vacations around these trails, and every summer the mountains come alive with the hum of tires on dirt.

As someone who lives, works, and rides in Summit County, I love sharing the routes that make this place special. And this past Sunday’s loop was one of those perfect early‑season rides — a classic section of the Firecracker 50 course that climbs past Bakers Tank, then drops into some of Breck’s most beloved flow trails.

🚵‍♀️ Why Summit County Is a Mountain Biking Paradise

Summit County offers a rare mix of:

  • High‑alpine climbs with huge views
  • Flowy, shaded singletrack perfect for intermediate riders
  • Historic landmarks like Bakers Tank and old mining sites
  • Easy access from Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon, and Keystone
  • Cool summer temps that make long rides feel amazing

Whether you’re training for a race or just want a scenic cruise, there’s a trail here that fits your mood.

🌲 My Sunday Ride: Firecracker 50 Segment → Bakers Tank → Aspen Alley → Moonstone → Barney Flow

Approx. Mileage: 10–12 miles depending on start point

This weekend’s ride was the perfect sampler of everything Breckenridge riding does well.

1. Boreas Pass Climb to Bakers Tank

~4 miles of climbing

We started with the classic climb up Boreas Pass Road, following the same route used in the Firecracker 50. It’s steady, scenic, and lined with early‑summer wildflowers. At the top sits Bakers Tank, the bright red historic water tank that once refilled steam locomotives crossing the Continental Divide.

2. Singletrack Connector Into the Forest

~1 mile

From Bakers Tank, we hopped onto the singletrack that winds through dense forest — cool, shaded, and flowy.

3. The Drop Down Aspen Alley

~1.5 miles

From there, we dropped into Aspen Alley, one of Breckenridge’s most photogenic trails. Tight turns, golden aspen trunks, and that perfect mix of speed and control make it a local favorite.

4. Crossing Over to Moonstone

~1 mile

At the bottom, we crossed back over toward Moonstone, a short but punchy climb that reconnects you to the Breck trail network.

5. Finishing on Barney Flow

~1.5 miles

And then the grand finale: Barney Flow. Smooth berms, rollers, and playful features all the way back toward town. It’s the kind of descent that leaves you grinning the whole way down.

Total Mileage

Depending on where you start in town, this loop typically lands between 10 and 12 miles with a solid mix of climbing, descending, and flow.
